Guacamole, who doesn’t like this delicious dip with chips? It’s the perfect sit down snack when it’s time to watch a movie. Or even when you are having friends and family over then you can make a big batch of this delicious guacamole for everyone to tuck into! It’s an easy appetizer to make when you have tons of other things to do.
We love a good guacamole in our home. Super tasty it definitely has to be. So in go many different ingredients to get the best flavors! The good thing is you can flavor it and make it how you like. Add a few ingredients here and there to perfect the taste. Definitely one of the best ways to use avocado’s especially when they don’t have much of a flavor by itself.
Well in my home there’s always one way I make guacamole and it’s the same way I made it the very first time and it’s still a favorite amongst us. It’s got heaps of flavor and we are always fighting over the last bit lol.
Ingredients you will need
Avocado’s, nice and ripe ones. Okay, how do you when they are ripe and ready to use? Usually you would know when the avocado’s are a slightly darker skin and less of a green color but more of a dark green to dark brown/black.
Another way to know when they are ready to eat is by gently squeezing the avocado’s. If the avocado’s are firm to touch with a gentle pressure then you know they are ready. If it feels mushy to touch and leaves a mark when you squeeze them then you know that they are probably over ripe and will most probably be brown inside. You definitely don’t want to eat those ones!
Onions, for some crunch and a sharp taste to the guacamole. For guacamole made with 2 avocado’s, a small half an onion is more than enough.
Garlic, yes a strong flavored ingredient but taste delicious here in this recipe. A little goes a very long way so just one medium sized clove of garlic for two avocado’s. Roast the garlic on a flame until charred and that is where the great taste is.
Fresh chili’s for that extra heat. Adjust according to preference. Chili’s go great with guacamole.
Tomatoes, for that sweet and tangy flavor and also adds to the soft texture binding the ingredients together.
Salt and pepper to season the guacamole.
Lemon juice keeps the guacamole nice and green and stops it from turning brown.
Cilantro, that fresh taste of chopped cilantro is a must in making guacamole. It brings the whole dish together beautifully.
All these fresh ingredients together make the best guacamole.
Preparing the guacamole
Most of these ingredients are simply washed and then finely chopped up. These include the onions, tomatoes, chilli’s and cilantro.
For the garlic peel and char over a flame and then finely chop.
How to cut an avocado?
Wash and pat dry the avocado’s. Then using a sharp knife cut the avocado across the length, going around the whole avocado.
Gently twist and pull the avocado halves and this will help to open up the avocado. You will see the seed inside one of the halves. Now very gently put a knife on the seed and twist the knife this will help to take the seed out. Sometimes the seed might even be loosly in and just come out very easily.
Using a tablespoon scoop out the avocado taking the spoon close to the inner skin of the avocado.
Transfer to a bowl and mash up using a fork. The mashed up avocado is ready to mix in with all the other ingredients.
Simple as that! Chill for 20-25 minutes before serving. Enjoy with your favorite chips!
Storing guacamole
Guacamole is best made on the day and even eaten on the day. But if you do want to make guacamole ahead of time then a good amount of lime or lemon juice needs to be squeezed on top of the guacamole this forms a barrier between the guacamole and air. Then cover the guacamole using plastic wrap, pressing close as possible to touch the guacamole. Basically making sure there is no air in between. Using this method guacamole can be stored in the refrigerator night before without turning brown.
