Rice…. it’s a staple in my house and for many more I’m sure. If there’s a curry then there’s rice of course. The combo is just perfect and I’m eating rice at least once a day. Cooking rice is easy peasy…. but I’m sure some of us still need to know how to cook rice and there’s nothing wrong with that. To be honest I didn’t know how to cook rice myself but like everyone I learned… if you have a rice cooker then it’s easy to follow the steps and turn your rice cooker on. I have one myself and it just saves time when I’m in a rush. But there have been occasions when I have cooked rice on the stovetop and it’s always perfectly cooked. So here we go….
There’s many types of rice, I always go for long grain basmati, I love the aromatic taste and flavor, the long grain looks great and with curry this grain of rice goes perfect.
So how much rice to cook?? You always want to cook just enough. So basically 1 cup of raw rice yields 3 and a half cups of cooked rice. So probably enough for 3 people. If you cook 2 cups then it should be enough for 3-4 people.

Now it’s always a good idea to wash and rinse the Rice at least 2-3 times, this removes surface starch from the grains. Then soak for at least 10-15 minutes, this helps the grains to absorb the water and cook better.
The ratio for cooking rice is two parts water to one part of rice so here if you cook one cup of rice you will be adding 2 cups of water.

So measure your rice with a measuring cup and add into a saucepan, rinse the rice, add the required amount of water using the same measuring cup for example 1 cup rice:2 cups of water. Let the rice soak for 10-15 minutes.
Now you are ready to put the saucepan on the stove, medium high flame, uncovered. Bring the water to a boil and then cover with a lid and simmer for 15 minutes on the lowest flame. After 15 minutes you can uncover and using a fork fluff the rice lightly then put the lid back on until you are ready to serve.

Here you have it, your rice is perfectly cooked and ready to serve with your favorite dish…..
Cooked basmati rice will store well in the refrigerator for up to 4-6 days.
