Jhal means spicy and muri is referred to puffed rice. A combination of other extra ingredients make up this delicious street food. Those who are familiar with jhal muri will definitely crave to have this while reading this post. It really is one of those foods that you crave for and simply can’t get enough of. The best part is how quickly it is made and street vendors only take a few seconds to serve this tasty snack up.

The first time I had this street food had to be when I first visited Bangladesh as a very little girl. For sure I was fascinated by this simple snack and just loved nibbling away. Like I said you can get this tasty snack in desi street fairs and even busy shopping streets. When you see those vendors selling jhal muri then there’s no waiting really, you just have to get there and get your share.

Only a few ingredients are needed to make this super easy recipe.

Chanachur mix (Bombay Mix), muri (puffed rice), onions, green chilies, tomatoes, salt, black salt, mustard oil and lemon juice. You could also add any other extra ingredients if you like as there as different variations of making jhal muri.

There is no real measurement of ingredients when it comes to making jhal muri. It really just depends on preference, on how more or less of a ingredient you would prefer to have. So when street vendors make this jhal muri they really just add a little bit of this and a little bit of that and it taste pretty awesome.

Here in this blog I will go ahead and give measurements for all the ingredients used so anyone can easily make this recipe.

Once all the ingredients are prepared then everything is added into a bowl or container preferably something with a lid on just so you can shake the container around. This will ensure to get a even distribution and mix of all the ingredients.

The jhal muri is best to be eaten right away as the lemon juice that is added will start to soften the chanachur, muri and will start to lose their crunch.

Easy Jhal Muri Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 and a 1/2 cups of chanachur mix (Bombay mix)

  • 1 cup of muri (puffed rice)

  • 1/2 of a small onion finely chopped

  • 2 green chilies finely chopped

  • 1 small tomato finely chopped

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon black salt

  • 1/2 tablespoon mustard oil

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Directions

  • Put all the ingredients into a bowl or container
  • Close with a lid
  • Shake the contents really well for 10-15 seconds
  • Serve right way and enjoy.

Notes

  • Best to serve this snack right away as the lemon juice will start to soften the chanachur and muri (puffed rice).
